Buses

The bus service in Mauritius is excellent and cheap, even if some buses are not always in perfect condition, and almost every part of the island can be reached by bus. The buses operate from 05:30 to 20:00 in urban regions and 06:30 to 18:30 in rural regions. There is a late service until 23:00 between Port Louis and Curepipe, via Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and Vacoas, and vice-versa.

Taxis

These can be hired from hotels or at taxi stands for a half-day tour. The taxi fare should be discussed before starting the journey. Fares vary and always include the return mileage. Some taxis are even fitted with a portable phone and many are air-conditioned. Taxis have white registration plates.

  • This celebration occurs over three days in February/ March and is the largest and most important Hindu festival held outside India. One of the days over which it is held is a public holiday. Most of the island’s Hindu population make the pilgrimage to the holy volcanic lake, Grand Bassin in honour of Lord Shiva. Many pilgrims, dressed in white, start walking in groups from their village a day or two beforehand, depending on how far they have to travel. They carry a kanvar, a light wooden frame or arch decorated with paper flowers.

  • Rose Hill Transport Ltd. was registered in 1954 and it regrouped 5 individual operators who were operating on Route No. 1 since 1952. It is listed on the Development Enterprise Market (DEM) of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius (SEM) since May 2001.

  • Bank of Baroda (BOB) commenced its operations in Mauritius on 19th October ,1962 with the opening of first branch at Port Louis.

    Mobile Branch was added in 1965 to cover rural/unbanked areas.

    Bank of Baroda expanded its operations in mid-70's with 4 more branches at Curepipe, Vacoas, Rose Hill and Quatre Bornes and added one more branch at Centre De Flacq in 2000.

    With the opening of door for Offshore banking in Mauritius , Bank of Baroda opened its Offshore Banking Branch in 1990.

  • First City Bank of Mauritius located in Port Louis. The First City Bank considers itself as a hundred percent Mauritian owned bank in Mauritius with four hundred and fifty million rupees of Capital Resources. The First City Bank started business since 2002 with acquisition of The Delphis Bank Ltd banking business. The Delphis Bank of Mauritius has been in operation in the island for around ten years and went to Receivership in 2002. The First City Bank in Port Louis is located at Sir William Newton Street where it owes two buildings including the Headquarters.

  • Airport

    The SSR (Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam) International Airport located in the south of the island is one hour away by car from the capital.

    The airport is managed by AML (Airports of Mauritius Ltd), and the airport intends to increase the number of shops as well as to improve the services available there.

    Several tour operators as well as Travel agencies have counters at the arrival terminal to welcome you or to help.

  • Curepipe is the best base for trekkers and for stocking up before your walk. Due to the lack of public transport over mountain roads in the island's southwestern corner, access to most trailheads will require private transport or a taxi ride. For lowland walking, take into accounts the heat and humidity. If you prefer walking on the highland plateau, come prepared for rain at any time of the year, especially from October to March.
