Tamarin

Tamarin is said to have good beaches and is well situated for most other sights. Tamarin Bay Beach is a small public beach in Tamarin with good views across the river estuary to Montagne du Rempart.

  • Behind Casela Bird Park stands Mauritius' 'Matterhorn' the Montagne du Rempart. You can drive up to the base and park at Tamarin Pumping Station, just off the beginning of road to Magenta. The climb is steep and difficult by Mauritian standards, although it should only take three hours up and two hours down. Trois Mamelles, east of Montagne du Rempart, has three peaks to scale. The approach is better from Quatre Bornes than from Tamarin.

  • This bird park, between Tamarin and the turn off down to Flic en Flac, is well landscaped and has good views across the Riviere du Rempart valley. As well as parrot, pheasant and rare pink pigeon, there are leopard, tiger, lemur, monkey and deer. One of the giant tortoises is 150 years old. The park is open every day from 9am to 5pm.

  • The Riviere Noire district has many attractions. The southwest coast is the centre for big game fishing and to a lesser extent diving and surfing. It boasts good long beaches and the islands best nature reserve, the Macchabee forest and Riviere Noire Gorges. In the north, most of coastal plain is comprised of cane fields but in the south, where the Port Louis road hits the coast at Tamarin, the plateau drops steeply towards the sea.

  • The popularity of windsurfing and the ideal conditions for it have resulted in many competitions, including World Championships, being held in Mauritius. Windsurfing instruction is available and equipment can be hired at beachside boathouses. Sailing shoes should be worn to prevent coral cuts. Water skiing in the sheltered waters of the reef-protected lagoons is also available with instruction for beginners.For surfing, the Bay of Tamarin used to be popular as the rollers coursed in through the break in the coral reef.

  • For Hindus this is the time of ceremonial bathing in the sea for purification, since they believe the holy water of the Ganges will be able to purify them through it. At the beaches of Albion, Belle Mare, Baie du Tombeau, Blue Bay, Flic en Flac, Mont Choisy, Pereybère, Pte aux Roches. Pte aux Sables and Tamarin, special lifeguard units are set up from 09.00 to 17.00 hours to ensure the safety of bathers.

  • This trip begins as for the trek from Le Petrin to Grande Riviere Noire. Follow the forestry road for just over 2km. Take the right fork and continue for another 500m or so to second fork in the road. To reach Tamarind Falls, you must follow the left fork, the right will lead you to the road which connects the Curpipe-Chamarel road with Mare longue reservoir.

  • Blue Bay is the official public beach closest to Mahebourg. This attractive beach can get quite busy on weekends. Good private beaches stretch back to Mahebourg, past Pointe des Deux Cocos to Pointe D' Esny.
