Sunken Treasure

Generally, either few people know about it or it was given up as a lost cause years ago, but the evidence is there, on the surface at least.

If you take a line about 200m due north from the steeple of Ste Philomene Church you come to a deep hole at the river edge. It is surrounded by reeds, often submerged and only accessible by pirogue. But the hole is there, it is deep, and is said to lead to a tunnel, perhaps connecting with another under the church or at the shore.

Somewhere inside is a treasure trove, possibly that of the infamous French pirate Olivier Levasseur, who was known as ‘La Buse’. The treasure trove has been the object of a long and controversial search at Bel Ombre in the Seychelles. One theory is that people are looking in the wrong place, and that Poudre d’ or would be a better bet. About 10 years ago,a French team unsuccessfully tried to excavate the hole. They found only a few coins.
