Location of the first Dutch settlement in Mauritius
The scenes you see in these three pictures are all situated at one location. Picture No.1 shows the Frederick Hendrik Museum, so called because the Dutch established their headquarters on this location from 1638 to 1710 and named their fort Frederick Hendrik after the then Stradholder of the Netherlands. Around and further down the museum compound the ruins of later settlements on this original Dutch site can still be seen. Pictures No. 2 and No. 3 give us an idea of those later settlements (French mainly). Hence this location is of paramount importance in the history of Mauritius.
