The main activities of this Ministry revolve around formulating policies in the energy, water and waste water sectors and the establishment of a responsive legal framework to govern the development of these sectors.

The Ministry also ensures that the necessary dynamism is created for services offered by the various organisations falling under its purview to be delivered in the best interests of the public.

The Ministry has under its responsibility the Central Water Authority (CWA), the Central Electricity Board, the Wastewater Management Authority, the Water Resources Unit, the Energy Services Division and the Radiation Protection Authority.

Objectives Of The Ministry

  • To provide a 24-hour good quality water supply to the whole population;
  • To ensure a reliable supply of electricity to all sectors of the economy;
  • To ensure judicious use of available water resources;
  • To progressively extend the wastewater network islandwide;
  • To maximise the use and benefits of indegenious renewable sources of energy;
  • To ensure electrical safety in buildings;
  • To ensure peaceful and safety application of ionizing radiation in the country; and
  • To maintain a dynamic and progressive Ministry that ensures the provision of efficient, effective and quality services by the organisations which operate under its purview.

  • The Central Electricity Board (CEB) is a parastatal body wholly owned by the Government of Mauritius and reporting to the Ministry of Renewable Energy and Public Utilities. Established in 1952 and empowered by the Central Electricity Board Act of 25 January 1964, the CEB's business is to "prepare and carry out development schemes with the general object of promoting, coordinating and improving the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity" in Mauritius.

  • Mauritius is now poised to become a cyber island and to serve as an info-communications hub in the region. The vision of an information society dates back to the early 1990s. However, recent top level commitment coupled with the creation of an enabling environment has given Mauritius a new impetus. It is Government's declared policy to make ICT the fifth pillar of the economy alongside sugar, textiles, financial services and tourism.

      • Formulate appropriate policies and provide the necessary legal framework for the development of ICT and its optimal use across all sectors
      • Facilitate, through the implementation of an E-Government programme, the provision of Government services electronically anytime anywhere for the greater convenience of the public
      • Promote and facilitate the development of the ICT sector.
      • Ensure that the ICT culture permeates all levels of the society to bridge the digital divide to the extent possible
    • The Ministry is responsible for local government administration coordination generally, with five Municipalities, four District Councils and 124 Village Councils. Over and above their own revenue-generating activities, central government grants are made to the local authorities to enable them to provide services and amenities at regional level. These include the provision of street-lighting, construction and maintenance of roads, drains and public spaces, provision and maintenance of bus shelters and traffic centres, organisation of sports and cultural activities, etc.

    • Role of Co-operatives Division

      The Co-operatives Division has the statutory duty to ensure that the Co-operative Societies operate within the co-operative legal regulatory framework. It assists in the consolidation , promotion and development of the Co-operative Movement through the creation and provision of favourable and conducive environment.
