The Public Infrastructure Division of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Land Transport & Shipping is responsible for the implementation of Road, Bridge and Government Building infrastructural projects.

Vision:
To construct, embellish, preserve and enrich the built and unbuilt environment in the interest of functionality, aesthetics, public health, safety, welfare and culture conducive to efficiency and comfort for the users and the public at large.

Mission:
To fulfil the needs of the nation in the design, construction, maintenance and repair of roads, bridges and government buildings by ensuring the provision of functional, aesthetic and environment-friendly structures conforming to high construction standards.

Buildings:

The Building Section of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Land Transport & Shipping (Public Infrastructure) is responsible for the implementation of building projects for Ministries and Departments. The Architect, Engineer and Quantity Surveying Sections, under the responsibility of the Director (Architecture), Director (Civil Engineering) and Director (Quantity Surveying) respectively ensure the safety, functionality, aesthetic of Government buildings and that they are environmentally friendly and conducive to efficiency and comfort to the users and to the public at large. The Ministry ensures that prompt response and professional advice are given to the user authority in the design, maintenance, contracting, monitoring and supervision of Government buildings to ensure value for money. The combination of technical excellence and sound management gives substantial cost benefits to Ministries and Departments.

  • In its endeavour to develop Mauritius into a Cyber Island and create an ICT-literate nation, the Government has clearly identified e-Government as a key initiative which can radically transform the way the Government interacts with citizens and businesses and redefine the nature of relationships across various Ministries and departments in providing seamless, consistent and value-added public services.

  • The Ministry is responsible for local government administration coordination generally, with five Municipalities, four District Councils and 124 Village Councils. Over and above their own revenue-generating activities, central government grants are made to the local authorities to enable them to provide services and amenities at regional level. These include the provision of street-lighting, construction and maintenance of roads, drains and public spaces, provision and maintenance of bus shelters and traffic centres, organisation of sports and cultural activities, etc.

  • The main activities of this Ministry revolve around formulating policies in the energy, water and waste water sectors and the establishment of a responsive legal framework to govern the development of these sectors.

    The Ministry also ensures that the necessary dynamism is created for services offered by the various organisations falling under its purview to be delivered in the best interests of the public.

  • The Government Sub-Portal provides comprehensive information on the various services offered by the Mauritian Government. This sub-portal has been designed so as to enable easy accessibility of information and services, ease of navigation and user-friendliness. This site can best be viewed on a screen configured for 800 x 600 screen resolution, but scales appropriately to both higher and lower screen resolutions.

  • Objectives of the Ministry

    • Formulate appropriate policies and provide the necessary legal framework for the development of ICT and its optimal use across all sectors
    • Facilitate, through the implementation of an E-Government programme, the provision of Government services electronically anytime anywhere for the greater convenience of the public
    • Promote and facilitate the development of the ICT sector.
    • Ensure that the ICT culture permeates all levels of the society to bridge the digital divide to the extent possible
  • The objectives of the Ministry would be resumed as follows:-

    • to preserve and foster cultural values both at individual and collective levels;
    • to promote cultural interaction among different cultural components within the country and abroad for mutual understanding and enrichment;
    • to upgrade, strengthen and extend the existing cultural infrastructure and to construct new structures;
    • to provide support to associations of artists and to individuals involved in artistic, and cultural activities;
