Objectives of the IBA

The Authority will regulate this sector by granting licences and more specifically by -

  • Promoting diversity, wider choice in the field of broadcasting through the setting of standards for the delivery of high quality service.
  • Ensuring that broadcasters operate in a level playing field where fair competition is the rule.
  • Ensuring that broadcasters preserve and promote the plural nature of the Mauritian society by specially dedicated content.
  • Encouraging the development of a local programme production industry where listeners and viewers are placed at the centre of broadcasting projects.
  • Ensuring that the people of Mauritius have the ultimate control of broadcasting services whilst accommodating foreign participation in this sector.
  • Providing protection and avenues for redress and representation to listeners and viewers in their relationship with operators.
  • Optimising the efficient use of broadcasting frequency bands.
  • Encouraging the broadcasting sector to eventually self regulate itself.

Unhampered freedom of expression and the consolidation of democracy will be the guiding principles of the Authority.

The independence of the Authority remains the sine qua non condition for achieving its statutory objectives and ensuring that the interests of viewers and listeners are preserved. Being primarily funded by licence fees, the Authority intends to operate in all independence.

  • Mauritius is now poised to become a cyber island and to serve as an info-communications hub in the region. The vision of an information society dates back to the early 1990s. However, recent top level commitment coupled with the creation of an enabling environment has given Mauritius a new impetus.     Objectives of the Ministry

    • The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is the public broadcaster of the Republic of Mauritius. Its funding comes from the levying of a television licence fee (60%) and commercials (40%).

    • The main activities of this Ministry revolve around formulating policies in the energy, water and waste water sectors and the establishment of a responsive legal framework to govern the development of these sectors.

      The Ministry also ensures that the necessary dynamism is created for services offered by the various organisations falling under its purview to be delivered in the best interests of the public.

    • Radio Broadcast

      Radio Broadcasting in Mauritius started on a private basis on 9 August 1927 by one Mr. Charles Jollivet with a Medium Wave radio transmitter of 1 kilowatt assembled by himself, two manual record payers and a carbon granule microphone. The station was lodged at his residence in Beau Bassin and was known as "Radio Maurice". It was later transferred to the attic of the Plaza Theatre in Rose Hill. The daily programme consisted mainly of music and news and lasted for 2 hours.

      • Formulate appropriate policies and provide the necessary legal framework for the development of ICT and its optimal use across all sectors
      • Facilitate, through the implementation of an E-Government programme, the provision of Government services electronically anytime anywhere for the greater convenience of the public
      • Promote and facilitate the development of the ICT sector.
      • Ensure that the ICT culture permeates all levels of the society to bridge the digital divide to the extent possible
    • The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is the national public broadcasting service (Radio and TV) of the Republic of Mauritius and its outer islands including Rodrigues.

      It was established as a body corporate on 8 June 1964 under the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation Ordinance no. 7 (1964). Prior to that date it operated as a Government Service under the name of Mauritius Broadcasting Service.
