  • The most popular beaches are on the northern coastline, from Tombeau Bay up to Grand Bay and beyond. Trou aux Biches is a long stretch, much of it is surrounded by the hotel complex of the same name.Choisy, further up to the coast, is a favourite spot with locals as well as tourists. The club Mediterranean resorts with good amenities and fast paced action enriches the beach at Pointe aux Canonnier. A delightful cove midway between Grand Bay and Cap Malheureux is Pereybere.

  • Tamarin is said to have good beaches and is well situated for most other sights. Tamarin Bay Beach is a small public beach in Tamarin with good views across the river estuary to Montagne du Rempart.

  • Due to strong currents, these are mainly drift dives with the boat following the divers. There are also a number of sites off popular Grand Bay. Some are nearby, like Tortoise, which is at 13m. Lots of morays, octopus and lionfish are found on these flat reefs. Coral Gardens, which starts at 18m, consists of coral banks between which are sand gullies. Commonly seen are squirrelfish, trumpetfish and goldies. For beginners, a good option is Perrybeer site, tropical reef fish abound as do moray eels.

  • Pereybere is a rapidly expanding resort a couple of km north of Grand Baie. It has a good beach and reef and a range of budget accommodation (mostly self-catering) and eating places

Grand baie and the northern coastline beyond Tombeau Bay has many delightful beaches Trou aux Biches with its splendid Hindu temple; then further up the coast Choisy, one of the most popular beaches of the island, which offers facilities for safe bathing, sailing, windsurfing and water skiing. Finally, the coastline curves into Grande Baie itself, the main centre for yachting, water, skiing, windsurfing, and many other watersports.

  • Conditions for sailing are usually excellent. The major beach resorts have small sailing dinghies which guests can use within the waters of the lagoon. Yachts can also be chartered for excursions into the open sea. Full day sailing programmes shared with other people can be booked through tour operators or hotel boathouses.Some outings combine sailing with shore excursions to otherwise inaccessible spots. An individual can join a group at a fraction of the cost of a private yacht charter. Sailing regattas are held annually.
