Surprisingly, few visitors seem to realize that cycling is an enjoyable way of seeing the island. Some hotels can arrange bicycle hire. Alternatively some tour operators rent out bikes, especially around the Grand Baie area.

      This is the main holiday centre for Mauritians and tourists alike. Grand Baie used to be a tiny fishing village. The northern coastline beyond Tombeau Bay has many delightful beaches. The coastline curves into Grand Baie itself, the main centre for yachting, water skiing, windsurfing, and many other water sports.

    • At Caverne Patate, in the south-west comer of the island, are some interesting caves with impressive stalagmite and stalactite formations. The requisite permit is issued at the Administration Office (Tel 8311504) on Rue Jenner, Port Mathurin. There are guided tours daily at 9am, 10.30 am, 1 pm and 2.30 pm. The permit charge is Rs 50 (for one to 10 people) and you should arrive at the cave entrance on the day and time specified on your permit. To get to the caves, take the road to Petite Butte.

    • Conditions for sailing are usually excellent. The major beach resorts have small sailing dinghies which guests can use within the waters of the lagoon. Yachts can also be chartered for excursions into the open sea. Full day sailing programmes shared with other people can be booked through tour operators or hotel boathouses.Some outings combine sailing with shore excursions to otherwise inaccessible spots. An individual can join a group at a fraction of the cost of a private yacht charter. Sailing regattas are held annually.

    • While you will be able to arrange hiking excursions independently. it is probably better to do so through a reputable local tour operator, such as MauriTours, speak to your operator about places like Black River Gorges, Combo Forest or Bassin Blaise - all of which have great potential as hiking venues.The Mauritian mountains don't require any special skills and you need only an average level of fitness to attempt them.

      The name Flic en Fac is thought to come from the old Dutch name. Friend Landt Flaak or Free and Flat land. On older maps this was spelt as fri-lan Flac, subsequently adapted by the Frenf into Flic en Flac.

    • Mauritius is promoted primarily as a beach destination, few people are aware of the attraction of walking, trekking or hiking around the island's interior. Only a handful of travellers choose to incorporate trekking in their holiday. Tour operators may be able to offer some advice or recommend somebody who knows about trekking opportunities on the island. Mauritius Mountains are better suited to hikers and trekkers than to climbers.
