Chagos Archipelago

The Chagos Archipelago was formerly administered from Mauritius. Then, a few years before independence in 1968, the British annexed the island under the British Indian Ocean Territory and leased the main island, Diego Garcia, to the USA as a military base for its Rapid Deployment Force. The Chagos islanders were moved to Mauritius and given financial compensation for the upheaval.
