At Caverne Patate, in the south-west comer of the island, are some interesting caves with impressive stalagmite and stalactite formations. The requisite permit is issued at the Administration Office (Tel 8311504) on Rue Jenner, Port Mathurin. There are guided tours daily at 9am, 10.30 am, 1 pm and 2.30 pm. The permit charge is Rs 50 (for one to 10 people) and you should arrive at the cave entrance on the day and time specified on your permit. To get to the caves, take the road to Petite Butte. The cave warden's hut is down a small track, close to the Centre Communal Mlost hotels and tour operators can arrange cave tours.
